The reviews didn't lie. The love story in the book was the sweetest thing ever.

I enjoyed reading HEREAFTER but I didn't feel the omph that usually comes with paranormal romances. I or Amelia (since it's told from her pov) didn't get to see much of the Hereafter. I didn't get surprised much by the turn of events either. Except I wonder why she changed so much from being just a ghost to something much more.

One of the things that were amazing about this concept though was how Amelia "came to life" after she met Joshua. I truly enjoyed all the shifts and change she went through from being in a fog, never feeling a thing (other than her panic attack after each of her nightmares) to discovering the joy of feel yet again but in a very distinctive way.

I was a bit disappointed by the villains. They were all too typical, nothing for me to empathize with (Yes I do empathize with villains). For a moment I had hope for Eli but it didn't happen. His motives didn't feel deep and strong enough for me and he didn't fight enough for what he wanted in my opinion.

Despite all that though this book is a page turner and you will like it if you're a fan of paranormal romance.

Alright, don't let my 3 stars deter you from reading this classic. They are only stars after all and I'm going to try to explain why (at my best).

I got the entire boxed set because it is a classic and I've heard a lot of good things about it so I decided to give it a try.

What I didn't like

It was too short and felt rushed.

Issues and roadblocks got solved fast, a bit too fast for me as a contemporary reader. I have no doubt this book deserved all the hype it got in it's earlier days. I'm only a child of today and I've been spoiled by MG books that made tension last for pages and pages.

Because things happened fast, characters also had to grow pretty fast and it wasn't quite believable to me, but that's a cause and effect to expect.

What I LOVED

The concept. Can you imagine how wowed people would've been back in the days? I mean even one of my coworkers who saw me reading went "Oh I used to love those", even though she couldn't recall exactly what she liked about them.

The fact that people could "tesser" is getting more real today. Just watch the science channel and listen to them scientists talk about time travel and worm wholes.

The writing was so different and yet felt so right to my writer brain. She broke a lot of today's writing rules but heh this is a Newbery book we're talking about.

The variety of languages used when Mrs. Who will talk with quotes, was heart warming (to me anyways). I mean French, German, and so many more. How often do you see that in today's published MG? I was pleasantly surprised. Oh and it gets better; there was a religious quote. Ha! A religious quote! How can writers get away with that these days without writing a book specifically labeled for a religious purpose?

Anyways, I can go on and on with what I loved, but the point is, this is a classic worthy of your time. Just give it a try. I can't wait to find out what else the author has in storage in the next books.

I don't remember ever posting something like this on my book blog before. But then again I haven't been doing serious blogging for that long. 2011 is actually my first time book blogging a full year so, yay.
I don't have much in terms of goals this year. You can find out why on my writing blog. However I hope to be able to do more book reviews next year. Maybe even double the amount that I did this year? That would be nice.
In any case I hope to read more books and complete all my reading challenges at least. To the occasional visitors to my blog I wish a very happy and full of blessings New Year 2012. Let nothing deter you from your goals and take care of yourself.

It's been a while since I've read a book so fast, but also it's been a while since I read a good YA paranormal romance.

I fell in love with the characters in this book. Each one of them stood out even competing a bit with the main characters for a spot in my heart. Samara is fun, sarcastic, and oh so often realistic in her views and opinions of the world around her. I'm glad the entire story was told from her POV. I wasn't so much into Caleb at first but he kind of sort of redeemed himself a little. Mia and Doug are my favorite mayhem couple. I had a few chuckles while reading passages about them. All the other characters from the people working at the bookstore to Nadine's mother, all made memorable imprints in my mind. I hope to see most of them back in book 2.

Now onto the story itself. Don't let the slightly slow start discourage you from finishing. Halfway through the book I remembered thinking "this is just like any other paranormal romance out there. Where is my OMG twist of events?" Well let me tell you the twist FINALLY came and boy was it good. I'm still grinning thinking about it. I seriously hope book 2 is going to start off with some sort of bang because book 1 left me wanting more.

Jaime Reed's supernatural concept might seem like a deja vu but trust me she was able to make it her own and I can't tell you how because that would be major spoiler. If you have the chance or opportunity, buy a copy of pick up one at your local library. This was in the end one satisfying read. :)

Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1) by Lauren DeStefano - A 2011 DAC Review

There is no denying this book being a strong debut. The writing was great, in fact it was so well written I had forgotten it was in first person. (I have a preference for third person)

My most favorite part was the world building and the chilling concept the author came up with. Not being able to live past your 20th birthday (for females) and 25th (for males) is so terrifying. There is also the political backdrop created by that very genetic condition. People against or for the find of a cure and some fanatics willing to go to the extreme to make their point.

In the midst of all that we follow Rhine a 16 year old girl, kidnapped to become a bride (which is common practice in that world). I loved seeing the world through her eyes and I admired her strong backbone. However she is not perfect (which is good) because she made some poor decisions along the way. (you have to read the book to find out for yourself)

Other characters stood out for me like Jenna, and Rose. I just can't tell you why without spoilers.

Now onto a couple of things that didn't settle well with me, and I repeat "with me".

There was a lot of questions left unanswered and yes I know the story is spread across more than one book. But still I enjoyed the numerous and carefully planned plot twists and turns enough to wish some of them had at least a partial resolution. For example the main bad "guy" and also prime suspect for a lot of things didn't have any "action". All I knew as the reader was through Rhine's eyes and therefore I know as little as she does. I can only hope the main bad "guy" will be back and actually cause some mayhem for the reader to witness.

I absolutely recommend this book if you haven't read it yet, but maybe you should wait till closer to book 2 release if you're as impatient as I am.

2011 Sophomore Reading Challenge

As of today I'm 2 books shy of completing my 2011 DAC challenge. There had been a few authors I was interested in following, so I was delighted to find out that there is this reading challenge. The challenge will allow me to have fun while I read and review books from some of the authors who have gained my reader loyalty.

POC reading challenge 2011- the end

When I signed up for this challenge a year ago, I was barely getting introduced to the need for more POC books and the constant struggle with white washing book covers and movie adaptations. I have Ari to thank for that but also my own drive to write stories with POC which led me to do some research and well, here we are.
I signed up for level 2 which required me to read 4 to 6 books. I was being cautious, thinking, surely there can't be enough interesting books out there for me to read since I'm all about fantasy and magic. I'm happy to say I was wrong. I found enough books to read and not only met my goal but went beyond.
I learned many things from this challenge, both as a book blogger and aspiring author.
As a book blogger I came across great books that qualified for the challenge but because of the cover art, I didn't think they were. I have other reviewers to thank for stirring me in the right direction most of the time.
There weren't enough African or African American authors in the categories I read, which were Middle Grade and Young Adult (paranormal, fantasy, etc..)
Thank goodness not all POC books are about racism, slavery and such. I'm not saying there is something wrong with that but I applaud the fact that there is variety out there for the reluctant reader. There are historical fictions that teach true Black or Asian (or Arab, etc..) history while using a fantasy back drop or the sightless touch of magic.
We need more book bloggers to join in the challenge and I hope with time this challenge will grow.

As an aspiring author this allowed me to see where there is need for stories. I had a hard time finding MG books with POC and fantasy. There are a few but you have to dig them out. Sci-fy, Steampunk and such, are even rarer. I'm waiting for that author to make it happen (please make it happen).
On the YA side it's a bit easier and Tu Books Publishing is on a quest to make it even better.

In the end I enjoyed this challenge so much that I will be on board for 2012.

It's almost that time again. Although I'm still not done with the 2011 debuts I wanted to read (things happen :( ) I've decided to sign up for next year as well. This one should go easier since it would be my second time.
I hope to be able to focus more on Middle Grades (so far there are only 12 on the US release list*), and find some PoC in those 2012 debuts to read as well.

The Remarkable & Very True Story of Lucy & Snowcap by Heather Bouwman

A tale told from the author's point of view and yet quite hard to put down once you get used to it. Heather Bouwman's technique is one they tell aspiring authors not to seek but I believe if done well it is brilliant. You know you're not directly behind the character's eyes and yet you can see yourself right next to them on their adventure.

For a fictional place Tathenland is real enough for me to wish it existed somewhere hidden on the map.

The two heroines are quite difficult to deal with (very strong personalities) and it made tension sparkle off the page when the author put them together on this adventure neither of them actually asked for. I think that was when I couldn't put the book down anymore.

Magic in this book is subtle and strongly linked to faith in yourself, in the unknown and nature. I thought that was pretty neat since I'm kind of used to the magic that's already there waiting for the hero (or heroine) to tap into it.

In all, I truly enjoyed this story (minus the slow start) and for once the occupants and the occupied had a chance to live together in harmony. Which is not what we see in real life aka any country that had been occupied by western civilizations in the past.

Good historical fiction with a touch of magic and the occasional funny chapters thanks to one character in particular. Go read to find out.

A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park - A Review

This book managed to compete easily with other favorite books of mine that I read this year. It was recommended to me by a fellow writer and friend. I have to admit I wouldn't have picked it up on my own since I have a thing for the magical and fantasy.

HOWEVER, despite the absence of those elements from this book I loved, loved every minute of it. I know of books written based in China, Japan and such but how often do you come across one from Korea? Not me.

The writing was fluid, I had no problem connecting with the characters. You learn to "read" some reactions from certain characters than expect them to talk. There was a lot "said" by not talking back or explaining.

More than once I smiled as I followed the character's thought process (he analyzed things and situations a lot) and see him make conclusions that only he could have found for himself.

The cultural aspect was colorful in details and explanations. I didn't have any "what?" moment and learned a lot from the art of pottery and how people were/lived in that time period.

Although it's not a true story, the author did an AMAZING job making the reader feel like "Oh my goodness I can absolutely see this happening" from the items and research pieces that inspired the story.

I miss Tree-ear and this is a book that I will definitely re-read because it was that good.

A Single Shard is a moving story about courage, perseverance, passion for art and faith in oneself.

The Fairy Godmother Academy #4: Lilu's Book by Jan Bozarth

This book was an interesting mixture of West African mythology (Twins, Ananze, Moon Goddess) and Western culture mythology (fairies).

Although the main character's voice was a bit hard for me to get into in the beginning, I was charmed later on by other secondary characters and the amazing world the author created for fairy godmothers in training.

This story shares the power of love and family, but also the power that we all have as individuals no matter what age.

Sometimes all it takes is a bit of courage with a dash of faith to make the impossible happen.

Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor - A review

AKATA WITCH surprised me and then bewitched me with its richness of characters, world, and also culture. Nnedi Okorafor made every tiny detail so vibrant and vivid it was impossible not to go "ouh" and "ah" as I was reading the book.

AKATA WITCH is about being different, but also about how that difference can actually make you stronger.

I've read many books about a group of kids destined to save the world for whatever reason but this was the first time in my experience that the kids are African/African American, and their mission is set in Nigeria and not the United States of America.

No offense to anyone though, I'm just telling what I saw in the book.

It was great. The author pulled it off.

Not once did the story lag, every event was meant to fulfill a purpose. At the end I'm telling you, you are going to be wanting more adventures with Sunny and her friends.

There were a couple of MAJOR things that wowed me forever.

First, the cultural behavior of the characters. It didn't matter if they were main or secondary, was spot on. The way Nigerian speak??? I did not think you could write it and it WILL make sense but Nnedi Okorafor did.

Then there is the descriptions of cabs and buses or "weird train", with the smell and all. It all brought me right back home. She got it all right.

Now the last and the BEST part of all. The food. :)

The names were right on. Where you can buy them and eat, were right on. She even put a "Pepper soup" recipe in there. OMG!!!

Alright, I won't be able to stop myself from raving on and on about this book. I could see it in a Studio Ghibli motion picture.

If you want the perfect cultural getaway this summer and can't afford the money to go to Nigeria, do yourself a favor and pick a copy of AKATA WITCH by Nnedi Okorafor.

The Emerald Atlas by John Stephens - A 2011 Debut Author Novel Review

I have mixed feelings about this book, and I hope by the time you're done reading my review you will know more or less what to expect when you read it.

The story started with a prologue. For the next 60 pages or so, the author did a lot of "point of view" jumping around. For me it was seriously distracting and it impaired the flow of the story.

However about 100 pages into it, I could tell at last that he had settled into a distinct POV depending on the scene or character which was in focus.

Toward the end, he'd had to do separate POVs again but handled it all smoothly.

Now what kept me reading to the end? John Stephen gave me characters to root for. They were all significantly flawed but oh so strong willed and courageous. The story was packed with action. Just when I think "Oh come on, it can't get any worse" he would prove me wrong. Honestly I'm glad I'm not the one who got as tested as the siblings were. Oh and the sense of family? Wow. I mean, it doesn't matter that the siblings disagree (quite often) or fight about something (anything). In the end they always stuck together as a team.

John Stephen even gave me second characters to care about and remember. One easy example: Gabriel (you must read to find out why).

The villains weren't all mean just to be mean. They were 3 dimensional. They had motives, not good motives in my opinion but motives nonetheless.

World building was pretty good, especially during action/danger scenes, and sometimes funny ones too.

I mean the author took the time to describe the best, filthiest and most grotesque (behavior wise) dwarf I've ever read of. SERIOUSLY. I won't be forgetting those images anytime soon.

Story arc was great, minus the slow and shaky start, too.

This will be a great summer read for anyone looking for a book packed with adventure, mystery, danger and some magic.

7 reasons why you should READ the Near Witch.

1- Victoria Schwab will give you characters to care deeply about. Even the "not so nice" ones. Lexi is stubborn and fearless. Cole is mysterious, sometimes appears fragile, and yet so powerful and determined at the same time. The forest will give you chills.

2- The town of Near, is indeed a character in itself, because it felt real. Real enough that, if that place existed somewhere I know, it will be on my list of places to visit before I die.

3- Who knew someone could draw so much out of the wind? I didn't, and you will find out when you read it too.

4- Victoria Schwab's writing is rich, I mean rich. Every word counts, every sentence counts. It all connects. I can see myself reading this out loud and savor each word. That's how good her writing is.

5- The Near Witch kept me reading, and when I'm not reading I'm thinking about it and couldn't wait to get back into it. Everything built up until the end. I wasn't even able to guess the end at all. The way she revealed things at the end made me go "wow, I didn't see this one coming".

6- There is angst, despair, but also hope and courage.

7- The words on the jacket copy are true. The Near Witch will feel familiar and yet it is so originally done. I couldn't help but agree with it.

I could probably go on and on about this book, because I enjoyed it so much. The bottom line is, you should get a copy when it comes out.

Writing software - Scrivener

Yes I know I don't need a writing software to actually write. I've proven that to myself already. However there was so much rave about Scrivener coming out for PC last year. Winning NaNoWrimo was in part to be able to use the discount that was given to me.
June is approaching super fast and still there is no Scrivener for PC. Why??? Soon my NaNo goodies will expire if I don't use them. :(
I can't afford a Mac just to be able to take advantage of Scrivener. Gah!!!

Ok, the rant is over. Scrivener for PC will come out one day and when it does I will be there to use it. Until then, my next WIP will have to be written old style, as usual.

Does anyone use a writing software? Would you mind sharing your experience with me?

The Great Wall Of Lucy Wu by Wendy Wan-Long Shang

Strong example of cultural diversity struggles and challenges.

Although this is a Middle Grade novel, I personally felt like it was strong enough to speak to any age range.

Lucy Wu was a brat at sometimes, but it was hard not to understand why she was like that. There were times I saw little old me in some of her reactions. Things she thought but didn't say, or things she said and immediately felt horrible for saying.

Everything goes into chaos but out of that chaos comes a new beginning, a refreshing one.

This book was so well written, and I gained a better understanding of Chinese Culture from it. Not once did the Chinese speaking bother me. In fact I wanted to know more, learn more.

Every character stood out, and was memorable for diverse reasons. Lots of emotional challenges and inner struggles, which in fact drove the majority of the story. Lucy was real with her good and bad sides.

I don't know the author personally but she taught me (with this book)there is nothing wrong from sharing your culture through your writing, and that meant a lot for the writer-me.

This was a great read.

I can see why writers rave about this book. It's very unique with it's level of testosterone.

Blake and his brother's characters were down right to the detail. If you're writing a fiction with a male voice, this book could be the answer for you. I wish I can say a lot about the story but there is no way to do so without my review being a spoiler.

Do you know the say "Shit happens?" I could apply that to various situations in this book. Another fact that shows just how well the author was able to bring real and true facts into her book.

In all I have to recognize terrific writing, but the story just wasn't for me.

I still recommend you read it.

It's a good contemporary fiction, something that could easily happen to your neighbor teen boy or your own brother.

Three reasons why you need to read this book:

1- If you're writing a MG book - READ IT
It has everything from strong character development to great tension, and setting, and everything.

2- If you want a strong example of how to nail your POV in your own story telling - READ IT

3- The story is simple and yet so complicated at the same time. Everything goes bad and yet in the end it all falls back into place. Oh my goodness how great is that? Really go to the library and grab one. I'm getting my own copy ASAP.

This book is a master piece.

Neil Gaiman did such a great job breaking a lot of writing "rules" and yet was able to pull it of in a fantastic way. I made a note to myself to study this book closely, because I was so impressed.

The characters.

They were well rounded, although a bit odd. But their beauty was in their oddness. I wish I can tell you more about them but I will be giving out too much by doing so.

The settings.

The author gave a new "light" on a graveyard. Really who would want to grow up in a graveyard? but after reading this, every time I see one, I doubt I would be able to keep myself from wandering over just out of curiosity. The ghouls world was also very intriguing during Bod's short visit down there.

The story.

It was a nice puzzle. One I could not see how the pieces were coming together until the very end. Yes he was that good, and even the end didn't feel like one. It was more of a new beginning, and I was sad to have to say goodbye to Bod. I grew to know and like him as he grew himself through the book.

If you haven't read this yet, do so when you have the chance. This is a master piece (at least for me).

The goldfish bowl teetered.

Spark beat his fins, to steady his tiny world. He let out a sigh of relief. Glittery bubbles escaped his pink mouth, and popped farther up. He turned and ran into the pirate ship. His world shook again, harder, throwing plant debris, and rotten food bits into his face.

This time it wasn’t going to stop. He painfully swam his way behind some algae when his world turned upside down.
Spark clung to the algae.

His fins slipped.

He reached out.

Missed.

Not Fair.

His last gulp of water squeezed out.

His colorful world went black.

A high paced story with characters that draw you in from the start.

My favorite character was Navin and I can't wait to get more of his scenes in the second book.

The environment and settings were just as part of the plot as any other characters. The chill of the weather, the dark and unwelcoming feel from the woods. They're always there when appropriate.

Unfortunately for me, for whatever reason, I went into the book thinking it was a stand alone, so imagine my grief, when I was left hanging on a cliffhanger at the end... *sobs*

Book 2 can't come out fast enough. I want to get to know Donna and Xan more. It felt like everything stopped on a PAUSE button as I was beginning to get a good hang on this great story.

There are a lot of secrets in need to be discovered and tons of questions in need of some answers, but I still enjoyed every single minute of this book.

A definite page turner that I highly recommend if you are into fairies, and alchemists, and all things paranormal.

Writer's Wednesday - Settings

Hello writer buddies and the occasional lurker.
How have you been so far? Well, actually since my first WW?
In my case, things at day-job are finally slowing down a bit, so I've been working on getting back into my writing/critique routine.

I've been working on envisioning the main setting for my next writing project. My first manuscript was written in a setting 95% real. The last two ones 100% fictional. So for this new baby project I wanted something as real as possible for my plot. I first tried to imagine it ---> FAIL. Then I went on google image and started researching pictures based on specific words. One simple example: Chaos.
Google being google they will throw everything at you, so now I have to sort through what "appeals" to me and what doesn't. Surprisingly enough, I came across a specific picture that made me want to know about the people, so I googled their name and had a plot "boost" after I was done reading articles about them.
Needless to say I got distracted searching for settings for my story, but on the bright side I made a discovery that may give a kick to my story line.

I plan on making a trip to the library to look up any book related to the area (country or continent) that I'm interested in.
Some writers look at maps to get their setting, or they use an area they grew up in or visited often.
Others take a trip to what ever location they're interested in using for their story (I wish I can afford it)
Others just created it, piece by piece with their imagination.

So I've shared with you my not-so-perfect process. Would you mind sharing your process with me "oh mysterious lurker"?

It's been a while since I've read a high fantasy and I loved every second of this one.
One Throne, One Kingdom and ... Princesses.

Eilis O'Neal did a great job weaving a thick mystery into a fantasy world, filled with Peasants, Earls, Lords, Barons, Kings, Princesses and such. There was one major twist that I certainly didn't see coming, and I give her thumbs up for pulling it.

I enjoyed reading about the MC Sinda. She made me feel like shaking her until her teeth fall at times, but she was also very compassionate, stubborn and smart.

Kiernan; Who wouldn't want a friend like Kiernan in their life? He was loyal, loving, funny, and very protective.

I also liked how Eilis explained magic, and the use of it or the essence. It was simple and yet made a lot of sense to me as a reader. (you will find out when you read it).

My only "issue" with this book was Sinda's moments of thinking and mulling over everything. Sometimes I just felt like "oh come on, just do it already" or "make up your mind for goodness sake". But I have to admit there are real people, real teens just like her, so in the end it made sense she wrote Sinda the way she did.

Her world felt real, the rules and descriptions of the everyday life, and hardships and all was well done. The mystery and the characters you will encounter while reading, make this book a guarantied page turner.

Timeless by Alexandra Monir - A 2011 Debut Author Novel Review

After reading this book I felt like "Timeless" was a bit of an understatement. They should have named it something much more powerful like "Time warp", "Time Twister" I don't know, anything better XD...

Ok, now I'm going to calm down and try to talk properly.
This book was great, just great. I don't even know what to rave about, if not EVERYTHING.
It starts with a heart wrenching drama then pulls you into a deep mystery with twists and turns everywhere, while feeding you bits of clues. I went "Wait a minute" quite often while reading it. :)
Characters were great, places and settings so real (because most were real), and I want to go back into that world like NOW.

First Crusader Challenge - My Entry

I've been practicing dialogue lately, so I decided to use it for this challenge and see how it turned out. So here we go:

You’re back already?
Yep. You mustn’t have noticed but, having six kids makes me a super mom.
Maybe, not just a super mom but a forever snacking one. Will you ever make time to have a normal breakfast?
Nah. I had bits of PJ sandwiches from the kids lunch. It was yum and filling.
Not enough.
Yes it is. Now smile.
What?
*Flash*
Did you just take a picture of me?
Yep. Your smile is always so dazzling.
Not when I’m trying to talk to you.
Oh noes…
What now?
You’ve got a piece of meat between your teeth. You didn’t brush your teeth after that Rabbit stew you ate last night.
None of your business.
Look at this.
*Flash*
Will you stop it? I was preoccupied about my new additions to my Sailor Moon sticker collection.
If you’ve use the thin blade knife to remove them from the package, they would’ve still been in good shape.
Oh just be quiet.
Tell you what, I’m going to place an order for brand new stickers, straight from their website, just for you, out of my budget funds. No strings attached.
Really? You would do that?
Of course, but on one condition though.
I knew it.
You have to promise to shed some extra pounds.
No way. Watch my fuliguline walk. See? Do you really think I need to loose more weight?
Absolutely. Remember what the presenter said on TV last night? about the benefits of having the right weight and all?
Nah, he bloviates a lot. That’s his job.
Fine. It doesn’t matter. I’m still going to help you with the stickers because I love you.

Warped by Maurissa Guibord - A 2011 Debut Author Novel Review

A fast paced urban fantasy, with a dash of mystery, romance and friendship.

Maurissa Guibord's characters were funny, serious, intriguing, charming, and imperfect. I loved that mix.
She got the 16th century era pretty good, except for one tiny bit of fact, but you will have to find out for yourself. And NO it didn't hurt the story in anyway at all. It's just me being anal about details.

I fell in love with William as soon as I saw the name "William de Chaucy". How can a guy with a name like THAT not be gorgeous and super charming??? Everything about him was perfect, even the imperfections.

Tessa was a strong female character, at times so stubborn I wanted to shake her, but she was great and real all together.

I was amazed at this concept of tapestry and threads linked to human lives and their fate. If this was for real I wouldn't have a hard time believing it. So in my opinion the author did a great job creating a fiction so complex it became believable. How some legends can cross cultures and still have the same root. It was fascinating.

The end wasn't all fairy tale, in fact I expected it to be kind of like "well, this is it. You just can't go around messing with fate and all," but instead I got some fairy tale and the author spun a twist I didn't see coming. Now I have one question "What's next?"

Unfortunately I didn't get to see more of secondary characters like "Hunter". There were hints in the beginning that led me to expect something about him but it never happened. Was that on purpose? Only time would tell I guess.

This book was great and I highly recommend it.

I grew up reading the story about Shahrazad many times and in various "versions", but this take brought a breath of fresh air to it.

Susan Fletcher is a great story spinner who gave more than life to the characters. The ones from the original story such as Shahrazad and the Sultan, were more than 2 dimensional, they felt real, and so were the additional characters she brought in to weave in the "behind the scenes" parts. You will get to know and care for those secondary characters, even though you will see them all through Marjan's eyes.

I knew it couldn't have been easy to keep someone entertain for hundreds and hundreds of night, but reading this book just gave it a new dimension.

Marjan is just a teen but yet she was so wise and courageous. She knew how to endure pain and still not give up. Her personality was so strong it over powered her hard not to notice disability.

You could see the Harem, and take a step alongside the characters through the city and the hidden passage ways in the Sultan palace.

I loved reading this book and will make room for it on my bookshelf. It was a behind the scenes like no other.

This book certainly deserved the hype. It was all mystery/murder/dystopian in one.
The reviews about the sense of claustrophobia? NOT A JOKE and certainly not an understatement.

I have very few things that I didn't quite love about it, but ultimately they would fall under the tag "personal preference".

There was a reference to Hitler, and I felt that it was under developed especially if you take the audience this book is targeting. I would suggest some research in the matter after you've read the chapter where this happened. WWII and all it's implications including Hitler has always been of great interest to me. However I'm aware there is only so much author and publisher can do to get a great book out there.

Now about the romance part... I didn't see enough. I was fed just the right scene to get me on the edge and that was it. So now I will "sob" every time I think about what I didn't get. (Just kidding) But seriously, I wanted to see more happen between Elder and Amy.

Finally let me gush about the awesomeness of this book. The plot was well done and had 2 major twists. Remember I said "Major".

The first I was able to guess (not too early though), but the second one was THE BEST!!! I so didn't see it coming, and I'm still grinning about it. Beth Revis did a great job.

Characters were real, with strong, deep and meaningful emotions. You could almost see yourself in their place. They get you worried, sad, angry, and relieved, with a bunch of questions still hanging in the back of your mind.

Setting? Let me just say I don't think I want to find myself on that ship for whatever reason. That's how well it was. Not once did I lose my sense of awareness about this giant flying metal in the middle of nothingness... And like I mentioned earlier the mystery murder including shocking secrets revelations, drove the story.

You will not be disappointed if you're a fan of this type of story and I bet you will fall in love even if it's not your type. I highly recommend it.

Durinda's Dangers by Lauren Baratz-Logsted - Review

I haven't read a chapter book since my first Katie Kazoo read, and let me tell you this book was just as good in its own way.

The voice(s) were light and pretty distinctive. The story had a beat to it which in my opinion is good if you want readers of that age to keep reading and not give up on your story.

The antagonist was so perfectly typical (not in a bad way) that I found myself chuckling when I was reading some of the "situations" the Wicket got into. This is definitely the type of character I would get all exited about if I've read the book when I was a kid.

I was impressed as to how the author was able to make all the sisters voice their opinions on a matter, by taking meaningful turns and not making the dialogue heavy. Now you might come across the occasional:

"..." said Annie,
"..." said Georgia,
"..." said Jackie,

and so on, from older sister to youngest Zinnia. While it "might" feel daunting (if you're an adult) reading, I just thought it was the loveliest thing ever. You know how kids get at that age :)

I highly recommend it and I say: "don't do like I did, start with book one". It would be a lot more fun that way, with all the clues and stuff.

It was BIOLOGY, all of them, human, plants, animals, insects, marine, you name it. By the time I was in Senior High, I was a Biology "Freak", the one the entire classroom expects to always have an answer to all questions, or solve quizzes. Trust me I didn't like the attention but I couldn't help loving the subject, which came in handy (grade wise) when I flopped on a Physics quiz/test or something. ^_^

XVI was true to all the advertising I saw about it. Indeed in the future, your innocence is gone after you turn sixteen. In fact they call it "sex-teen".
This was a very interesting concept to me. Even though it was set in the future, it raised the same issues teens go through today when they turn sixteen. All the peer pressure to have a boyfriend, have sex, so you can "fit" in and all. Except here the pressure is not coming from other teens or social environment, it is coming from a "media run government" and had become the "norm".
Julia Karr did a good job making every character stand out on its own. From Nina to Wei. In fact she did so well I want to know more about the other characters lives. A girl can dream right?
Due to the type of society they were living in, Nina and her friends came off to me as being very mature for their age, even Sandy (in her own way). I thought that was a neat way to make the concept more believable. Oh and the best part? Talking about sex in everything but Taboo. Ha!
Oh, and I have to say the chemistry between Nina and "the" guy was sooo HOT (to me anyways)! I missed my teenage years right then. :)
(and no I'm not that old yet)

The futuristic scenery was good, except I wished she had described the futuristic transportation better. How did the "green trannie" look like for real? This is probably just me, but I like to see it whole in my head.

The plot as a whole was strong and consistent. It will definitely keep you reading.
Now I'm not sure why it ended the way it did. I can't say a lot without spoiling it for other readers. But I was engrossed in the story enough to have a bunch of "why?" swarm in my head after I was done reading.

So this is a great start for a debut novel. I recommend it if you are into the futuristic and all.

Illegal Digital Downloads of books - how can book bloggers help?

I don't rant often, so please bear with me.
I've mentioned before that along with being a book blogger I'm an aspiring writer as well. Today I came upon an article from a fellow blogger and it made my blood boil. The amount of books being downloaded illegally CAN SERIOUSLY HURT a published writer's career. Find out HERE for yourself and let me know what you think.
I don't know what publishers are doing to help, but I want to do something and I'm open for suggestions. We can help. Illegal download is not the way if you can't wait. We have libraries, Second hand book stores, paperback instead of hard back, join with a fellow book reader and put your money together to buy. There is always a legal, proper way to get to read a recent novel from an author you say you are a FAN of. Doesn't being a FAN comes with some loyalty? At least it does to me.

I'm probably going to be one of the few to be "odd". I have no pets although I've considered starting an aquarium full of gold fish with huge eyes. So I have non organic "things" that constitute my non-human family. I will start with my Anime Collection (never ending), my Hayao Miyazaki collection, my favorite books that I read and re-read, and my online World of Warcraft characters and friends.

So if you are like me and your non-human family is also non-organic or purely virtual, post away. I am very curious to find out what makes your non-human family. Of course everyone else is welcome. The more the merrier. Happy Friday to all.

Networking among writers

I've thought about this for a long time (well, at least over a month), trying to decide if I should or not. In the end I realized the only way of knowing is to jump in. So here I go.

In addition to book blogging (which I've taken serious interest in these past months) I do blog or journal about my writing. However if you are an unpublished writer or aspiring writer (which ever you prefer) you know writing can get pretty lonely at times (unless you have an awesome group of friends you see like every week or something). So I've felt the need to connect with other writers out there like myself, but the only problem is I use LiveJournal specifically as my writing journal. If you want to take a look there is a button on your right, under POC CHALLENGE.

Given, I've already met awesome people on blogger so far (I'm grateful I did meet all of you) but I want to meet other people who blog on LJ, without making my blogger buddies feel like they have to create ANOTHER blog just to follow my writing rants.
So this is totally on a volunteer basis. Fill out the form if you think I may be worthy of reading your LJ blog. Ignore if this is not your cup of tea (no hard feelings there).

The Latte Rebellion by Sarah Jamila Stevenson

I will describe "The Latte Rebellion" as a Contemporary YA novel, which brings into focus the feeling and notion of being of a mixed ethnicity. That was one of the reasons why I was so exited to read it and find out more about the "rebellion".

It was a great read.

I will make no mystery about how it all started: slow. If you are one of those readers (like me) who have been spoiled with a strong hook from the start of a story, you may need a little bit of patience with this book. Why am I giving this advice? Because the ending was soooooo worth it I could not believe it. That's why.

The author did a good job with character development. I don't know if she did it on purpose but I was not a big fan of Asha in the beginning. She came off a bit "smug" and "spoiled". I liked her friend Carey a lot better (voice of wisdom) even though she was a bit of a follower. However they both grew a lot by the time the story was over. Asha became more mature (think before you act) and Carey was more than ever career driven and she grew a spine.

The other characters along with the main protagonist brought fun, a little bit of romance, some well known high school rivalry and "rules defiance" into the mix of the story line. I've never been to California but wow, now I so want to go check it out.

The plot itself kind of took me by surprise but also reminded me how easily something that was supposed to be fun and not so serious, quickly took on a life of its own and brought disaster along.

I did expect her to make a stronger racial statement off the start (because of the title) but she still did it toward the end as everything unraveled, affecting Asha, her family and friends; even the entire high school. The statement in my opinion was very strong even if she went at it in a different way. It is a YA novel after all and it is important to make it appealing to the age range.

There is so little I could say without being a spoiler, so my conclusion is: if you've ever felt like a "Latte" (a mix of coffee and milk, no matter the brand) then this book will be a great read for you. It is about identity, equality, what you truly believe about yourself and doing (working for) something you believe in strongly.

Next on my list for my library holds I have Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey.

It was recommended to me by a fellow aspiring writer and reader when they found out about my interest in Neil Gaiman. I've never read any novel from Richard Kadrey so it will be interesting to find out more about this one book.

I am not going to lie, my general feeling about this book that I've just put down like 5 min ago is "I enjoyed it very much". However I'm going to put my personal feelings slightly to the side and do my best to give an objective and honest review.

First what bugged me while reading this book.

-It was written from beginning to end in Present Tense. I knew there were authors who did that but I must confess this was my first time reading one. I have no doubt as I pursue my reading goal this year I will come accross a few more, but it was something I had to get used to, to continue reading. However as soon as I settled in the rhythm I barely noticed it any more.

-The beginning was a bit slow; even though I did know she was setting the reader for all the clues and occurrences to happen. About a 3rd through the book I had to look up the author's website up to find out more and I discovered there was a sequel (why didn't I do that before?). So then it all made sense.

-She did a great job with character development. My only issue was I wished she didn't paint one sister as the clean clear cut "evil". (I'm not telling which sister, ha) It would have been so much more interesting to get a deeper insight into her but maybe I will find out in the next installment?

-Oh yes, I forgot. James presence was slightly weak, which was a bit of a disappointment since he was one of the firsts you will come across when you start reading. But again there is a second book so maybe he came more into focus there.

Now what I absolutely loved about the book. (there is so much)

-The author was very skilled at feeding the reader just enough info to keep you intrigued and therefore keep reading. At every turn she will "toss" something your way and you will be scratching your head along with Amalia and her 2 friends to make sense out of the new clue, or piece, related to the prophecy.

-The setting was just amazing. She clearly did her homework. Birchwood Manor felt real and yes a bit creepy, especially at night.

-The characters were strong even the ones that rarely spoke like Edmund, had a strong and noticeable presence, through Lia's eyes. Oh Henry! what can I say? without being a spoiler? you've got to meet the young fella. You will not regret it.

-The prophecy was woven intricately in my opinion. It wasn't just a clear cut "you have to go to square A to get to square B". No, this one was not perfect and yet had enough clues and occurrences to prove itself true to you within the context of the story of course. You only know as much as the main character knows. I loved it.

I could go on and on about what I loved about this book. But by the time I'm done doing it, it would have turn into a spoiler.

It was a great read and I highly recommend it if you haven't read it yet. This book is going on my "wish list".

I look forward to reading it and posting my own review. There are already some reviews popping on the web but I refuse to even "glance" at them until I've found out for myself.

First Day of the new year 2011. I would like to wish to all my followers and those who take their time to leave a comment on my posts a HAPPY NEW YEAR. May the new year bring you much joy and a lot of accomplishments.
Now there is an author I met after I started blogging my writing on LiveJournal. Her name is CYN BALOG author of YA Novels: SLEEPLESS, FAIRYTALE, STARSTRUCK. She mentioned an article that she wrote (which was published) in the January 2011 issue of THE WRITER MAGAZINE. I told her I was going to check it out. It is a very interesting article about how she made it to publication through online networking. It spoke directly to me and I believe it will touch every aspiring writer out there. I recommend checking it out if you can. It costs less than 7 bucks, plus the entire magazine is always full of interesting info for writers.
